Moment without a Name - Wheeeee!

Wheee

This is the Incredible Hulk roller coaster at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. But it could be any roller coaster, really. While some may shoot you through a tunnel at the start, or have 24 different kind of loopdiloops, or hang you upside down, they all do the same thing. They totally scare the shit out of you.

But then they leave you feeling so exhilarated you feel you can jump over tall buildings - you can do anything in those first moments after you get off.

I never used to like roller coasters. In fact I never went on one until I was in my late 20s - it was the Mighty Canadian Minebuster at Canada's Wonderland outside of Toronto. I was nervous, but then spent the entire ride laughing my face off. It wasn't a really scary ride, it was just plain fun! It was the ones I went on afterwards, the ones that scream they are the Tallest, the Most-Death-Defying, and the Most Adrenaline-Pumping that scared the crap out of me. I always complained about going on them - no, this one is TOO tall or TOO crazy. But I always came off them with that exhilarating feeling.

Why? Because I discovered a secret about myself - the more I surrendered to the ride, the better it was.

All I needed to do was settle in and just let go. As long as I could hold onto something like the restraint bar or the seat, I felt completely suported, completely safe. And that feeling of safety let me fully open to the experience, glide like a bird, soar like jet.

I certainly don't go to amusement parks all that often, but I need to remember those feelings. There are so many things in life that are freaking scary - leaving a job to do what you love, having a child, exposing your true self to those around you, heck even just asking out that really cute guy. Try to find something you can hold onto, something that will give you a feeling of safety - it could be a friend to help practise your difficult conversation with, it could be a support group for new mamas, it could also be knowing that the world won't end if you do __________.

Once you've got that support bar in your grasp - GO FOR IT. Surrender to it. Let yourself go beyond the fear to feel exhilarated.

What are your wheeeeeeeee moments?

**What's a moment without a name, you ask? It's moment where your heart sings, your senses are ignited, you can see, feel, hear, things that are sacred to you. They come from any of those textural moments in a life, be it surrounded by wooly coziness in front of a fire or the heat of the sun on your face. Join me as I celebrate these moments and textures in our lives, they don't last long.**

What's new, pussycat?

Bullrushes and birds

Hello there, my lovely readers! I hope you are all doing well and enjoying a lovely spring wherever you are. I've been working on some new items for the shop, and if I might say so myself, I like how my silhouette is shaping up for the summer :) I've created a few designs for the online shop in the shape of bullrushes, a bird, and a branch. I've got a bunch more ideas up my sleeve, so definitely stay tuned!

I'm happy to announce that manusmade is now Live! And In Person! You can find my silhouette pillows, along with a variety of tea towels, felt containers, and coasters at Flock Boutique on Wellington Avenue, in Wellington Village here in Ottawa! I'm so excited about this relationship, as I've always been in awe of the designers and artisans that owners Bridget and Christina showcase in both Flock and their original shop Workshop (on Dalhousie). If you buy some goods, the money might go right back into Flock - I was there eyeing up a beautiful dress on the weekend!

I'm also super happy to announce that I will be a seller at the Idle Hands Craft Show on June 11. This spring the show will be at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 760 Somerset Street West, in Chinatown. Doors are open from 10am to 5pm. A load of great artisans are going to be there, and I count myself lucky enough to be among them. Come out and buy local, support handmade, and have some treats at the same time. There will be lots of great food there! I hear that Spins and Needles DJs will be there so if you stop by my table, I'll make sure to take a dance break with you!

Father's Day 2011 Gift Guide

Hello everyone! I've gone ahead and put together a little Father's Day gift guide for you all, because I know how much you love to give handmade gifts, even when you don't have the time to make something special. You'll find something for all types of dads here - from the iPhone addict to the scotch connoisseur. There's even one in there for the dads whose only kids are of the fur variety. And I haven't forgetten the dads who can still quote the entire screenplay from The Empire Strikes Back after 30 years (I may be related to that one....oh, my poor nephews and niece)

Anyway, enjoy, happy shopping and happy Father's Day to all the amazing dads out there!

Fashion! Turn to the left...

Costume design

I'm thinking of taking some classes in fashion design. It's been in the back of my mind for oh, about 25 years now. So I'm thinking it's maybe just about time to act on that wish, no? It's not that I consider myself a couturier by any stretch of the word, or even that fashionable, really.

I just really like being surrounded by fabric.
I love coming up from my basement studio with bits of thread in my hair.
And I love making something that I'm proud of.

One of the main values I have set out for myself (mainly business-related, but it also applies to me personally - and truly, aren't they really the same thing to some extent) is to deepen my knowledge of all things textile. I consider myself a tactile person (you've heard me oohing over the feel of linen ad nauseum, haven't you?) and I as begin to set my business up where I'll be teaching other people to not be afraid to jump in and make things for themselves, I want to deepen my own understanding and relationship with textiles. That means visiting textile and fashion museums, hanging out with crafty folk, delving into the history of textiles and fashion, upping my sewing skills, and getting into pattern-making. Some of that can come from just being around inspirational things and people. But part of that will have to come from committed learning.

Now, most of you probably know how crazy I get about learnin'... I'll take classes in anything just so I can pull out my freshly sharpened pencils and start note-taking on those crisp blank pages. But this desire, to take textile courses is something a bit deeper for me. It's the pull of something that's been inside for a very long time. It's the focus on creating and making and doing and showing. It's the stillness of the fashion section of London's Victoria and Albert Museum where I got a chill and prickly eyes just looking at the breathtaking pieces by designers now gone. It's the giddiness I felt the day I took a little one-day costume design workshop at the theatre I volunteer at.

What are your inner whispers? Is there a long-forgotten hobby you loved that still nudges you once in a while? Do you get a chill in certain spaces and places like I do? Do you keep wishing you could have more time for creative endeavours? How long will it take to listen to your inner wishes, and then how long will it take you to act on them?
