2011 Year in Review and Lessons Learned

DSC_2050

This year's Christmas tree

I hope you've all had wonderful holidays and have taken the time to eat, drink, and be merry with all your loved ones. I've been busy playing host for Christmas dinner and having fun at other celebrations. I'm not working (at my day job) this week, and am finding myself loving the freedom this week is bringing. I spend a few hours in bed this morning looking through craft books, am thinking up plans for the new year, and am going over and reviewing this first year of manusmade.

What a wonderful year it has been. Crazy, busy, frustrating, learning, reflective, confusing, building, laying groundwork, and arriving at moments of clarity. These are the words I think of that encapsulate this past year.

It is hard to believe that manusmade opened its doors just this past March. I have met so many wonderful people, made so many things, build fabulous relationships, learned so much, and have grown so much as a person. All thanks to you. Seriously, I would not be in the same place today without you - wonderful friends, partners, and customers. 2011 was about laying ground, building a strong foundation on which I can grow manusmade. In this respect, especially, it was successful.

  • I opened my Etsy shop on March 17, something I've wanted to do for ages
  • I volunteered at a few craft shows in town, putting myself out there, introducing myself to other artisans
  • I participated in my first craft show in June - Idle Hands - I was proud to sell my goods and meet customers face-to-face
  • I got accepted as a permanent member of Urban Craft, and have sold really well at this monthly craft show at an amazing venue
  • I was a book club babe as part of ARTrepreneur, a fabulous online community for creative entrepreneurs
  • I was interviewed by Danielle Cresp for Scoutie Girl's series Where Craftiness Come From
  • I worked with Meagan Gallagher from Method and Madness and learned so much about myself and my business
  • I worked on finding my voice on the blog, realizing that the more I put myself out there, am honest and open, the more I get out of it (interaction and relationship-building with YOU)
  • I am finding my feet and feeling more comfortable marketing manusmade in ways that feel right to me
  • I realized what my worth is to manusmade - as designer, planner, inventor, marketer, and relationship-builder.
  • I figured out what my tipping points are - how busy I can get before it becomes too much for me, how many things I can take on before it's no longer fun
  • I figured out some plans to deal with the aftermaths of those tipping points - how to be productive without getting stressed, how to take care of myself so I don't burnout, how to delegate things that are no longer important for me to do. ----> this one here was such a huge epiphany for me this year
  • I reached out to Deanna with an inkling of a dream, and now we have planned an amazing retreat in this Spring, in Santa Fe. I am blown away by the journey of this experience, and can't wait for May 2012

No matter how much I outlined what I wanted to accomplish in 2011 (back in January), there was no way I could have imagined how fantastic it would actually turn out. I will need to remember that for next year - plans may take me in a new direction; things may take longer to do than I anticipate; or I will simply not want to follow through with something I originally thought I wanted. I know that for 2012 I will continue to have amazing experiences, and will hopefully be blown away at the end of the year with the things I have accomplished and learned along the way.

Thank you again, my wonderful readers and friends for being a part of this ride, you are truly amazing.

Holiday Gift Guide: Clothing edition

Hello everyone! This is the fourth of several holiday gift guides I've put together for you, as I know how much you love to give handmade and vintage gifts, even when you don't have the time to make something special. You know how much I love handmade goods, especially ones that you can use or admire every single day. I'm creating these guides to introduce you (and me!) to artisans around the world who are creating beautiful things that can enhance your everyday.

In today's guide, you'll find amazing clothes for your favourite women (or yourself!). Not only are these clothes well made, they are architectural, graphic, and beautiful items. For some of you, handmade clothes conjurs up the memory of that dumpy corduroy dress you made in Grade 8 Home Ec class (do they even have that anymore????) Not these, they are so structural, so gorgeous, they are art pieces in themselves.

Next week will be the last gift guide before the holidays, so make sure you stop by again soon!

Enjoy,
Tania xo

Spark Retreat: Come on, baby, reignite your fire

Spark-ad-600x150

When you want something, when you really, really want something, it's always a good idea to try to make it happen. I did and I have and I'm thrilled to talk about it finally!

It all started when I was sitting in a restaurant in Winnipeg during the summer, eating alone as I was away on a business trip. Well, not really alone, since I had my laptop open in front of me and was reading inspirational business advice as is often the case (in this case it was Kelly Rae Robert's Flying Lessons). Kelly was talking about how she had wanted to meet other strong women who were creative entrepreneurs who were going through the same things as she was. So she set up a retreat with a friend of hers, and the women that met together that first year became life-long friends and support systems for each other.

I was struck really hard by that. My skin went all goosebumpy, my eyes welled up a bit, and my heart starting singing. Yes! I want this too!

So I sent Deanna an email right then and there, letting her know that I wanted to set up a retreat, with her by my side. It was a bit of a rambling email (well, a lot) but it was straight from the heart. I wanted to set up a meeting that would be a welcoming, comforting, all-inclusive style of get-together where several creative entrepreneurs could get together and learn from each other. We'd talk about creativity, about our successes, our failures, our creative and entrepreneurial desires. We'd build a community of strong women that we could count on, be there for, and go through this crazy journey together.

Deanna wrote back right away with a huge YES!

So, today I am THRILLED to announce to you that Spark, the creative entrepreneur retreat is happening in beautiful Santa Fe, New Mexico from May 3-7, 2012 at the GORGEOUS Hacienda Dona Andrea. We've pre-launched the site, and you can get some basic information for now! Sign up for the newsletter so you'll be the first to know when we release the cost and workshops that will be given (very soon!). I can let you in on a big secret though on who will be headlining the whole weekend: Michelle Ward, creative business coach extraordinaire from When I Grow Up; and Jessika Hepburn, creative entrepreneur superstar from Oh My Handmade Goodness.

I know! It's going to be incredible!

So pop on by and sign up for the newsletter, check out what we have up on the site already, and start dreaming about hanging out with a lovely bunch of creative entrepreneurs, in the THE most gorgeous hacienda nestled in the mountains of New Mexico. I'll be talking more about the retreat in the near future, but let me know if you have any questions!

Interview: YOU

Hello my favourite people! I know you have been loving the gift guides from all the responses I've been getting. I also know that you love the interviews I've been posting featuring people who are creative entrepreneurs.

I also know, though, that YOU are super creative. You probably wouldn't be here if you weren't in some way.

So this week, I'm turning the tables. I'm putting you on stage, and holding the microphone up to you. It's your turn for the karaoke of manusmade.

Ok, enough with the goofy metaphors.

I'd like to interview YOU this week. I'd love for you to de-lurk and let me know the answers to a few questions. I want you to share a bit about yourselves and start a conversation with the tribe that is growing around here.

I've got a few questions for you, and I'm excited to hear what you have to say. OK, so here's what I'd like to know (and so would everyone else):

1. What are some of your favourite Creative Christmas (or Hanukah or any holiday) Moments - tell us about a time you handmade something for Christmas - whether it's the santa ornament you made when you were 8, or the beautifully knitted scarf that you made last year.

2. When do you feel your most creative?

3. What creative activity makes your heart sing, makes the time fly, and makes you feel like a Martha Stewart superstar?

Over to you, my lovelies,

Tania xoxo
